Occasionally Auckland Sketchbook escapes the city to somewhere interesting — and close. This time the sketchbook got a workout in The Bay of Islands . Only 3.5 hours by car and a world away from work. The sketch above was made in down-town Paihia, it doesn't look it, but it is literally behind the main street. I joined Dreydon, author of Bruce wants to go faster, at the CRC Speedshow this weekend to sell copies of our book.
The weekend was a dry run for Dreydon who will be at the Goodwood Revival meeting in September. He'll have a stand selling copies of the book to what we hope will be an enthusiastic public. All I can say is — luck bugger!
Interest was excellent and a good number were sold on the weekend. It was great to meet some interesting people too. Thank you to those who stopped by for a look and a chat, and to those of you who walked past and didn't stop - I hope I managed to sketch you on your way past.
I managed to crank out this sketch in between sales, this time using the end pages of my Fabriano watercolour sketchbook. It's a beige-ish 'laid' stock which means it has a slight ribbed texture, a bit like old fashioned letterhead paper. It was a lot of fun to experiment with some white gouache to help pull some features out of the background creating an interesting sense of depth.
