Occasionally Auckland Sketchbook escapes the city to somewhere interesting — and close. This time the sketchbook got a workout in The Bay of Islands . Only 3.5 hours by car and a world away from work. The sketch above was made in down-town Paihia, it doesn't look it, but it is literally behind the main street. The view is the back of an old homestead called Williams House . I was attracted by the orchard of very old fig trees on the left that had me imagining eating juicy ripe figs. Sadly they weren't in season but it must be a fun place at harvest time. Right over the other side of the bay you will find his falling down old house on Matauwhi Bay. The biggest super yacht to have ever berthed in Auckland arrived last week, and it looks totally mad and at 119 meters long it's longer than New Zealand's largest navy vessels!
It's designed by Philippe Starck apparently, so think sleek, like a submarine. Almost devoid of embellishments, port holes, rails and the like, an invisible panel slides away so a smaller boat or three can be launched, but that's about all I could see.
She was built in Germany by Blohm + Voss, they've been building floating things since 1877. They know a thing or two about boats having pumped out many of the world's maritime heavy hitters some of which you might have heard of including the Bismark.
