Having drawn 1 or 2 disappointing night sketches in Auckland over the years I wasn’t expecting much of this sketch of Our Lady of Dolors, the largest church structure in Asia*. To make the sketch read correctly I decided I needed to capture the basilica in context . It's an impressive structure to record but without placing it into a bustling Indian street scene is a bit 1 dimensional – it could almost be anywhere. I was standing in a continuous stream of cars, motorbikes and people steadily passing by... horns were beeping, it was hot, people were brushing past me constantly and neon lights were glowing, so adding suggestions of these was necessary to add the context that helped to tell a story about the look and feeling of the place. ...always a petrol head really. I didn't get much time at the NZ Festival of Motor Racing last week, but here are a couple of quick sketches (done with an impatient 5 year old). Unfortunately I missed seeing some more exotica including the Amon AF-101. Hopefully next year.

A modern, but I like these stripped out Renault Spiders and hadn't seen one in NZ before...
Ex Chris Amon March F1 (has previously spent most of it's life hanging on the wall at the Donington Collection...
If only some of these cars had been around when I was designing and illustrating Eion Youngs books, 'Forza Amon', 'McLaren Memories' and 'Memories of the Bear' for HarperCollins a few years back!

Excellent, another auckland Sketcher. I use the Rotring Tikki or Staedtler pigment pens which seem to be water fast when watercolour is added over top. Also one of those little Windsor and Newton travel kits with a Sakura Waterbrush for portability. I use the Hahnemühle sketchbooks and sometimes the Moleskine ones too.
